2008 Term Positions at Various Northern Sites

Invites you to submit your resume for upcoming potential TERM POSITIONS at various Northern Sites

 

The annual preventive and corrective maintenance along with new work initiatives at some of the North Warning System Sites is expected to take place from about April to November 2008. These projects require short-term work teams, and following provides a brief description of skills required for each position. SITE SUPERVISORS: Responsible for the overall activities that are scheduled to take place at the site. Requires: 3 to 5 years experience supervising teams of at least five people in an operations and maintenance capacity at a remote site; and, previous work experience at one of the NWS sites is required.

 

SITE ESCORTS: Responsible for ensuring safe/secure access to the designated NWS Sites as follows: liaison to the Zone Managers and the North Bay Support Centre and providing on-site guidance to visitors as to the NWS Operating protocol within their designated area of responsibility; and, responsible for documenting, reporting and maintaining facilities files. Requires: experience and/or background to working within a mechanical or electrical/electronic systems environment to activate/de-active site systems; and, supervisory/ management background and/or previous work experience in the military or RCMP considered assets.

 

CHEFS: Prepare and serve meals, bake, ensure kitchen sanitation, receipt/storage/inventory and documentation of food management, food inspection, and meal planning based on master schedule. Requires: certification as a journeyman cook, previous experience and valid drivers license.

 

FACILITIES MAINTENANCE TECHNICIANS: Responsible for the operation and maintenance of the power plants, as well as general maintenance of facilities and equipment. Requires: completion of recognized technical training program, and possession of journeyman qualification (i.e. Electrician) in one or more trade areas.

 

FACILITIES MAINTENANCE TECHNICIANS - VEHICLE: Maintain/Repair site vehicles, heavy equipment and power support equipment, both mobile and static. Requires: journeyman qualification or equivalent, plus experience.

 

HEAVY EQUIPMENT OPERATORS (HEO): Heavy equipment operation, roads, runways and grounds maintenance, and/or land fill operations. Requires: Licensed heavy equipment operator and experience operating equipment such as dozers, loaders, graders and/or dump trucks; and some areas require Air Brake endorsement.

 

FIELD INSPECTORS: Inspect sub-contractor work, ensure work is carried out in accordance with plans & specifications, coordinate site activities between sub-contractors and head office, and write progress reports. Requires: Civil/Mechanical/Electrical or Electronic Engineering technician diploma, depending on the project requirements, plus a minimum of 5 years hands on experience in field work utilizing pertinent Canadian construction codes.

 

WEATHER OBSERVERS: Observe and report special climatological and/or synoptic weather observation to aircraft. Requires: completion of weather observation training & certification, and previous weather observation experience.

 

BEAR MONITORS: Escorting and ensuring safety of staff. Requires: proof of a Possession of Acquisition License (PAL) and/or Fire Arms Certificate (FAC).

 

CARPENTERS: Building heavy crates for the handling, transportation and storage of hazardous materials. Requires: completion of a recognized carpentry training program or equivalent, minimum of 3 years related carpentry experience, and knowledge/experience in the handling of hazardous materials. Certification in WHMIS and/or Transportation of Dangerous Goods would be considered an asset.

 

WAREHOUSEPERSONS: Performs inventory control, handles packages and labels materials for storage or shipment, operates material handling equipment and performs manual labour duties, maintains good housekeeping practices, assists in the transportation of personnel and trips to the long or short range radar sites. Requires: previous experience in inventory control and shipping/receiving, valid drivers' license, and ability to operate a fork lift.

 

RIGGERS: Carry out tower plumb inspection, guy tensioning checks & adjustments, and antenna base level checks & adjustments. Requires: Certified Rigger with minimum of 5 years related experience.

 

PLUMBERS: Repair water distribution systems, sewage handling systems and glycol heating systems. Requires: Valid provincial/inter-provincial plumbers license, and a minimum of 5 years experience as a plumber. A familiarity with the water sewage and heating system in a northern environment considered an asset.

 

WATER TANK CLEANERS: Drain, clean and paint, if required, water & sewage storage tanks; conduct tests to ensure water is potable by using chlorination and iodination methods of disinfecting water conduct residual chlorine test and free caldrine test as required; and, prepare records and reports on the condition of the domestic water system and submit these as required. Requires: secondary school education or equivalent and 3 years experience in water treatment including disinfecting of water storage systems; and, certified in confined space entry and rescue.

 

HVAC: Perform corrective maintenance on all types of refrigeration equipment and air handling and associated pneumatic or electrical control systems. HVAC Technicians require a HRAI certificate (Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Institute) for an environmental awareness course, and valid Refrigeration Mechanic license, a valid O.D.S. license, and a minimum of 5 years experience as a Refrigeration Mechanic.

 

GENERAL LABOURERS: Janitorial duties, housekeeping, garbage disposal, vehicle operations, and hauling of sewage/waste and water. Requires: prior related work experience and valid drivers' license for most applications.
